January: Start the Year at the Beach

Trade the post-holiday rush for a slower pace along the coast. With average highs around 55°F, January is made for bundling up for a peaceful beach walk, exploring coastal towns and enjoying the coast without the summer heat.

May: Beach Season Begins

May brings average highs around 81°F and ocean temperatures averaging 71°F, making it increasingly tempting to get in the water.
It’s also the beginning of sea turtle nesting season, which runs from May through August, with hatchings beginning as early as July and sometimes continuing into October. Remember to admire marked nests from a distance and follow local guidelines to help protect these special coastal visitors.

Average highs reach 89°F and average water temperatures climb to 82°F, making July ideal for swimming and watersports. Early mornings and evenings offer cooler opportunities for beach walks, bike rides and outdoor adventures.
July is also celebration season. Southport hosts the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival, one of the state’s most beloved Independence Day traditions, with festivities that bring visitors back year after year.
Sea turtle hatching season can also begin in July, adding another dose of coastal magic to summer nights.
August: Savor the Last Stretch of Summer
Best for: Warm water, beach days and one last summer getaway
Summer isn't over just yet. August brings some of the warmest ocean water of the year, averaging around 82°F, along with average daytime highs near 88°F.

October: Festivals, Oysters and Fall at the Beach

Fall at the beach has a flavor all its own.
Average October highs hover around 77°F, while average ocean temperatures remain a comfortable 75°F. The month also brings some of the destination’s signature annual events, including the North Carolina Oyster Festival in Ocean Isle Beach and the North Carolina Festival by the Sea in Holden Beach.
October marks the return of oyster season, giving seafood lovers one more reason to visit. Fall fishing, golf, kayaking and beach walks round out a month packed with reasons to get outside.
