Revolutionary Roots in the Brunswick Islands
Long before the United States officially declared independence, the Lower Cape Fear region played a critical role in the events that shaped the nation. Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson stand as reminders that resistance, debate, and calls for liberty were already taking shape here in the mid-18th century.

Once one of North Carolina’s most important ports, Brunswick Town was at the center of colonial politics, trade, and protest. Its residents experienced firsthand the growing tensions surrounding British taxation and governance, making the site a powerful place to reflect on the ideals that would eventually define American independence.
Today, visitors can walk among the ruins, explore exhibits, and attend special programs that connect the past to the present, especially during America 250 commemorations.
