Anyone who has spent time along the North Carolina coast knows the wind is rarely on vacation. Calm mornings in North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands can deliver postcard-perfect golf conditions, but when the breeze rolls in off the Atlantic, the challenge quickly ramps up.
Fortunately, several Brunswick Islands layouts offer protection from the elements. Whether sheltered by tall pines or designed to reward smart course management over raw power, these courses remain enjoyable even when the wind starts to howl.

Meadowlands Golf Club
Located in Calabash, Meadowlands Golf Club offers one of the most player-friendly layouts along the coast and that pays dividends on a windy day.
The Willard Byrd design stretches just over 7,000 yards from the tips, and while parts of the layout are open, Meadowlands winds through woods and wetlands, creating natural protection. The wide landing areas also allow golfers to keep the ball in play when conditions get breezy.

Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort
Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort offers 27 holes spread across three nines - Magnolia, Azalea, and Dogwood - allowing golfers to mix and match layouts depending on conditions.
The property winds through Carolina pine forests and wetlands in Calabash, providing a mix of sheltered holes and open vistas. That variety can be especially valuable on windy days. The Willard Byrd/Clyde Johnston design blends natural beauty with playability, making Brunswick Plantation a favorite for traveling golfers.

Sea Trail Golf Resort – Maples Course
Designed by Dan Maples, the Maples Course at Sea Trail Golf Resort is a classic Carolina layout framed by towering pines and live oaks, with five holes that play along scenic Calabash Creek in Sunset Beach.
Because many holes are bordered by mature trees, the course often feels more insulated from coastal winds than some of the more open layouts nearby. Accuracy is the key here. The Maples Course isn’t overly long, but its tree-lined fairways and undulating greens reward golfers who keep the ball in play.

Magnolia Greens Golf Club offers a slightly different feel than its more southerly brethren.
The course winds through a residential community in Leland and features tree-lined fairways, elevation changes, and well-protected greens, which helps reduce the impact of coastal breezes. Because the layout rewards smart positioning and solid iron play, Magnolia Greens is a comfortable option when the breeze kicks up.

The Lakes Country Club
The Lakes Country Club in Boiling Spring Lakes is one of the more relaxed and enjoyable public rounds in the Brunswick Islands, and its inland setting helps reduce the impact of the wind.
The course plays through pine forests and around natural lakes, offering a quiet refuge from the chaos of modern life. For traveling golfers looking for a laid-back round that remains playable, The Lakes is an underrated option.
