Golf is a challenging game, even for the best players in the world. For most of us, it’s a constant battle, physically and mentally, and that struggle is a big part of what keeps us coming back for more.
Still, no mid- to high-handicapper wants to walk to the first tee knowing they have little chance to score. The good news? North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands are home to a collection of courses that strike the perfect balance between fun and fair. These layouts reward smart play, offer room to breathe, and most importantly allow everyday golfers to enjoy their rounds and the area’s naturally scenery.
Here’s a closer look at six Brunswick Islands courses that are especially inviting – for different reasons - to mid- to high-handicap players.

Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club
Home to the Sand, Piper and Bay nines, this 27-hole facility begs you to shoot a low number. Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club is a Dan Maples design offers forgiving fairways, minimal forced carries, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Oak Island Golf Club
Located on a barrier island, this George Cobb beauty offers five sets of tees that range from 4,931 yards to 6,717 yards, providing a fair test for players of all ability levels. After an enjoyable round of golf at Oak Island Golf Club, every group should enjoy a bite to eat or drink at Duffer’s Pub & Grille, the clubhouse restaurant.
The Lakes Country Club
This was Brunswick County’s first course, and it continues to delight players more than 50 years after its 1962 opening. The Lakes Country Club plays through a native pine forest and along gentle topography, providing a welcoming backdrop a course that delivers a memorable experience.

Sea Trail Golf Resort – Byrd Course
The Byrd Course at Sea Trail, which underwent a dramatic 2024 renovation, delivers a balanced challenge that golfers can enjoy from start to finish. Architect Tim Cate overhauled the Byrd Course’s bunkers, returned the greens to their original size and specifications, and added fairway width, among other enhancements, making it one of the area’s most sought-after tee times.

Carolina National Golf Club
Designed by 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples, Carolina National Golf Club is a 27-hole facility that is home to Egret, Ibis and Heron nines. This isn’t the easiest course along the Brunswick Islands, but with five sets of tees, it’s playable for anyone willing to check his or her ego at the bag drop. No matter your handicap index, the holes at Carolina National playing along the Lockwood Folly River make it one of the area’s most picturesque courses.
Together, these Brunswick Islands courses prove that great golf doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start planning your golf trip by exploring golf packagers and other accommodation options in the Brunswick Islands.
