When the Byrd Course reopened in fall 2024, golfers discovered more than a new layout—they experienced the beginning of a renaissance at Sea Trail Resort, long a cornerstone of the NC's Brunswick Islands golf scene.

A Renovation Rooted in Excellence

Renowned architect Tim Cate, a Sunset Beach resident with ties to Willard Byrd, the layout’s original designer, spearheaded the Byrd Course’s transformation. The project encompassed extensive tree and root removal, new cart paths, reimagined bunkers, and the installation of new greens. By expanding the greens to their original footprints and installing Tahoma Bermuda collars, the team ensured optimal playing conditions for years to come.

“The Byrd Course now offers a completely different experience. If you played it prior to this year, you wouldn’t recognize it today,” said Jimmy Biggs, Director of Golf Operations at Sea Trail Resort.

The reshaped bunkers received a significant upgrade with the installation of the Better Billy Bunker system and G-Angle sand, which dramatically improved drainage and reduced maintenance.

Additionally, the course now features seven new waste bunkers that enhance the layout’s playability and aesthetic appeal. These additions, coupled with widened fairways, have made the Byrd Course more playable for mid-handicappers while maintaining its challenge for more skilled players.

Enhancing the Player Experience

The upgraded TifEagle Bermuda greens have garnered widespread acclaim for their speed and undulation as players rediscover the course’s subtle breaks and contours.

Tree removal also widened the fairways, transitioning the Byrd Course into a true resort-style layout. “It’s much more forgiving off the tee,” Biggs explained.

A Complete Stay-and-Play Destination

Beyond the golf course, Sea Trail Resort has made significant strides in enhancing its appeal to visiting golfers (and family vacationers). The addition of 27 on-course townhomes, each with three bedrooms accommodating up to six guests, provide modern lodging and easy access to everything the area has to offer.

The off-course offerings at Sea Trail have also been elevated with the opening of 55 Bistro Bar and Sunset Prime, a premium steakhouse. “Guests can now enjoy exceptional dining without leaving the property,” Biggs said. “From breakfast to dinner, we’ve created a space where players can relax, socialize, and savor a variety of culinary options.”

Looking Ahead

The Byrd Course renovation is part of a broader vision for Sea Trail. The renovation of the Maples Course will begin in May 2025, followed by the Jones Course in 2026. These projects will include similar upgrades, ensuring all three courses meet the highest standards of playability and aesthetics.

Enjoy the New Sea Trail

For the traveling golfer, the renovated Byrd Course offers an unparalleled combination of challenge, beauty, and hospitality. With world-class accommodations, dining, and a commitment to customer service, Sea Trail Resort is a primary reason the future of golf along the Brunswick Islands is brighter than ever.

“Park your car on Friday, and you won’t need it until you leave,” Biggs said of the Sea Trail experience. “Everything you need is right here.”
