Look behind the beach and discover a different side to our barrier islands. The salt marshes, creeks and estuaries form a vast ecosystem where salt water meets fresh and a wildlife nursery results. You’ll also find some of the best kayaking on the coast. The wetlands teem with crabs and oyster beds, which also provide ample opportunity for bird watching. The waters are full of sport fishing species like redfish, flounder and trout, as well as dolphins, shrimp, skates and other marine life. These areas are best explored by canoe or kayak, johnboat or other outboard craft, or even by paddleboard! The Intracoastal Waterway also threads its way through Brunswick County, providing wonderful views of the marshes. Some local accommodations also provide views of the wetlands.
