Bald Head Island
So natural and unique that it’s only reachable by ferry, Bald Head Island was once a hideout and refuge for notorious pirates like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, Native Americans, explorers, soldiers and sailors. Now, this no-cars-allowed island can be your family’s vacation hideaway, accentuated by the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. Built in 1817 using the bricks of an older lighthouse from 1795, Old Baldy and the adjoining museum are wonderful places to tour. As you explore the island by bike, boat or golf cart, you’ll be treated to a wide diversity of natural landscapes, including pristine beaches, maritime forests, sand dunes and salt marshes. You might also enjoy spending a morning on the links, or fishing for the catch of the day. An island so set apart that 50% of North Carolina’s sea-turtle nesting takes place on its shores, Bald Head Island is a beautiful place to retreat with your family.
