The Mainland
The beach might be the Brunswick Islands’ main attraction, but to really enjoy the area, a visit to the mainland is a must. Located just across the Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington and stretching south and west to the South Carolina state line, the mainland has plenty of interesting things to see. Wander along the docks of fishing villages, and watch as fishermen bring in the catch of the day. Check out the oyster houses along the waterway, and find a delicious restaurant in which to sample these local favorites. You can also discover more than 50 natural and manmade lakes—many of which are perfect for inland fishing and boating. And to truly get away from it all, explore small towns such as Seaside, Winnabow, Leland and Varnamtown. Some of them might be little more than crossroads, but they abound in small-town friendliness. Have lunch or coffee in a local café to chat with the locals, and chances are, you’ll feel right at home.
