North Carolina's Brunswick Islands
The beach might be the Brunswick Islands’ main attraction, but to really enjoy the area, a visit to the mainland is a must. Located just across the Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington and stretching south and west to the South Carolina state line, the mainland has plenty of interesting things to see in its 13 incorporated mainland towns. The Boiling Spring Lakes area is perfect for inland fishing and boating. And to truly experience the Brunswick Island’s atmosphere, explore small towns such as Varnamtown where you can wander along the docks and watch fishermen bring in the catch of the day. The fastest-growing town in the county, Leland adds new shops and restaurants all the time and is home to Brunswick’s newest golf course. Winnabow features the historic interests of Brunswick County’s original settlement, Brunswick Town; the earthworks from the Civil War post, Ft. Anderson, and the beautiful floral gardens of Orton Plantation. While some of these towns might be little more than crossroads, they abound in discoveries that will make your vacation unique.
